Help me list exactly what’s wrong in the Welfare Reform Bill

flattr this!

There have been lots of articles and blogs about things that are wrong with the Welfare Reform Bill, but strangely there doesn’t seem to be one complete list. Please comment below to help me create such a list and I will update this text as comments come in. The Welfare Reform Bill will

  • Replace DLA with PIP, introducing a 20% budget cut and regular assessments.
  • Limit contribution-based ESA for people in the WRAG to one year, after which people may only claim income-based ESA if their partner earns less than £7,500 per year.
  • Reduce child tax credits (not sure how exactly)
  • UC will not cover spare bedrooms in social housing.
  • Charge parents for the use of the CSA after breaking up.
  • Limit total household benefits to £26,000 per year. (Except when on high rate PIP?)
  • No longer count disabled children as having paid national insurance contributions.
  • Abolished the social fund, to be replaced at the whim of local authorities.

It’s a shame that we didn’t have the funds that 38Degrees seem to have to hire lawyers to check through the NHS Bill. That would have been helpful - oh what a shame they only jumped on board the campaign train, when it was too late!

Make official-error overpayments recoverable, and introduce fines for claimant-error (but not fraud) overpayments (in addition to recovering them)

PIP - regular assessments for people’s conditions that will never change, is a waste of taxpayers’ money.

PIP will have much higher costs of assessment (don’t have figures, sorry), so (on top of real-terms budget cut) less of the money spent on it will go to claimants.

If/when I lose DLA,I will no longer be automatically entitled to a bus pass, blue badge or disabled persons railcard. Also,I will have to return my Motability vehicle.
So,in essence,I will be stuck at home as it will be difficult to get around if I have to pay for all these services on a reduced income.

Everybody seems to be missing the point, it is usless defending or even trying to understand the current system, IT IS FLAWED. Believe me you are all different what we need is a fair system that delivers a fair benefit dependent on wether your own Consultant or GP diagnoses illness or disability until this happens and the private so called disability analyst are scrapped nothing, I repeat NOTHING will get any better. THIS IS WHAT YOU NEED TO CAMPAIGN FOR. FORGET WHAT COMPANY IS DOING THE ASSESSMENTS, IF IT IS A PRIVATE COMPANY THEY ARE THERE FOR A REASON AND ONE REASON ONLY, TO SHOW A PROFIT TO THEIR BANKERS AND SHAREHOLDERS.
